Legacy of Speed

An archival photo from the Speed City era shows Tommie Smith sprinting across a beach in a gold singlet and crisp white split shorts. Inspired by these original uniforms, our race-ready kits are delivered in classic Speed City colors. Cut for performance from a lightweight and moisture wicking dryCELL mesh, they’re finished with our Tracksmith x Puma insignia and a small back pocket.

Highly functional dryCELL materials draw moisture away from the skin to keep you dry and comfortable. With an internal brief liner, elastic waistband and adjustable internal drawcord, the Speed City Short offers a secure, custom fit. The shorts feature a small back pocket that can hold a key or gels.

Tracksmith x Puma

Together Tracksmith and Puma celebrate the legacy of Speed City, the dominant California men’s collegiate running program of the mid-20th century, whose athletes not only set global standards for performance but also fought for social justice through the Olympic Project for Human Rights and the 1968 Mexico City protest. It’s a culture of courage that lives on today.

Five percent of all Speed City Collection sales on Tracksmith.com will go to benefit the work of the Tracksmith Foundation to protect and create opportunities for youth in track and field.

From the Archives

Speed City was known for making statements on the track, paving the way for today's sprinting stars. At practice, on race day and around campus, they brought a signature style to classic activewear styles.

An Oral History

There are some stories that demand to be told in full. Tracksmith's first-ever podcast is a collaboration with Revisionist History’s Malcolm Gladwell, entitled Legacy of Speed. It tells the tale of Speed City from its origins to its impact.

Culture of Courage

The cultural impacts of Speed City cannot be underestimated. They established a global standard for performance and set in motion the dominance of sprinting in the United States and Jamaica for decades to come. Their activism galvanized the world and established a precedent for fighting for social justice through sport. It’s a battle that’s still being waged to this day. Together, Tracksmith and Puma celebrate the legacy of Speed City and their culture of courage.
